{"id":2539,"date":"2013-10-11T05:30:50","date_gmt":"2013-10-11T05:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mirror.lgc.org\/wordpress\/?p=2539"},"modified":"2014-04-10T23:41:05","modified_gmt":"2014-04-10T23:41:05","slug":"renewable-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mirror.lgc.org\/wordpress\/renewable-energy","title":{"rendered":"Renewable Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coal, nuclear and natural gas plants are the United States\u2019 primary sources of electricity, generating about two-thirds of the nation&#8217;s greenhouse gas emissions, one-third of the pollution that causes acid rain and smog, and over half of our nuclear waste.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>California law defines renewable energy as that derived from solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and small- to medium-scale hydropower facilities. These technologies are designated \u201crenewable\u201d because they do not use scarce, toxic fossil fuels and because they are regularly replenished through natural processes.<\/p>\n<p>Use of these cleaner, renewable energy technologies can help reduce climate change impacts. Under restructuring, local governments may be able to participate in building new local markets for such technologies by becoming\u00a0Community Choice Aggregators.<\/p>\n<p>The LGC promotes both energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy resources.
